A Turkish towel does everything a conventional beach towel does at a fraction of the bulk. Woven from lightweight cotton, these dry quickly, shake off sand rather than holding onto it, and fold down small enough to leave room in the bag for everything else you actually need.

Cotton beach towels that dry fast and pack down small.

Ours come from Saarde, whose Totem design has become a warm-weather staple, and from Basil Bangs. Both are woven rather than looped, which is the reason they behave so differently from a conventional towel - there is no pile to trap sand, and far less material to stay damp at the bottom of a bag on the drive home. It is the closest thing to a sand free beach towel you will find.

They also get better with use. Turkish cotton softens with each wash rather than thinning, so a good one lasts years. Beyond the beach, they work as a throw over a chair, a picnic layer, a wrap, or a guest towel - which is the quiet argument for buying a good one rather than a cheap one.
